University of Babylon Discusses a Diploma Thesis on Early Breast Cancer Detection
The Department of Family and Community Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon, held the defense of a high diploma thesis by student Evan Thamer Abdulzahra, titled “Motivations for Early Screening versus Symptom-Based Presentation among Women Attending the Early Breast Cancer Detection Clinic”, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohanad Abbass Al-Shalah.
The researcher explained that the study aimed to evaluate the motivations behind behaviors related to early screening, the level of awareness, and associated factors among women visiting early breast cancer detection clinics in hospitals across Babylon Governorate.
The results showed that 47% of the women attended for early screening purposes, while 53% attended due to existing breast complaints. A significant association was found between attending for early screening and educational level, occupation, and family history of breast cancer. However, the overall knowledge regarding breast self-examination, clinical breast examination, and mammography was found to be poor.
The researcher concluded that enhancing awareness and implementing structured health education programs is essential to increase participation in early detection and improve health outcomes
