A Groundbreaking PhD Dissertation at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon — The First of Its Kind in Iraq
The College of Medicine at the University of Babylon has defended the PhD dissertation of student Alya Hashem Mohammed Al-Ghurairi, titled:
“Molecular Characteristics and Biological Activity of Purified Streptokinase Enzyme from Streptococcal Bacterial Genera”,
under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ilham Abbas Banyan Al-Saadi.
The defense was attended by Prof. Dr. Jawad Kazem Trad Al-Khafaji, Head of the Department, along with a number of faculty members, academics, and postgraduate students.
This study is the first of its kind at the University of Babylon and in Iraq. It succeeded in registering twenty isolates of the streptokinase enzyme in the Global Gene Bank, in addition to the successful cloning of the enzyme gene in Escherichia coli. This scientific achievement opens new avenues for the study and therapeutic application of the enzyme.
The researcher presented an in-depth study exploring the molecular and physiological characteristics of this vital enzyme, emphasizing its importance and potential uses in both medical and research fields. The current study involved isolating and analyzing streptokinase from different Streptococcal bacterial genera, revealing an enzyme with distinct molecular features and high biological activity in dissolving blood clots.
The researcher and supervisor demonstrated that streptokinase is a versatile enzyme with strong thrombolytic efficacy. Moreover, the study discovered a unique capability of the enzyme to act as an anti-biofilm agent, a critical feature in addressing antibiotic resistance, which is largely driven by biofilm formation. This unprecedented discovery marks a significant milestone in developing innovative treatments for complex medical conditions, especially infections linked to biofilm structures.
