PhD Dissertation at the University of Babylon on Female Androgenic Alopecia
As part of the activities of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, the College of Medicine, University of Babylon, held the defense of the PhD dissertation of student Hamoud Hathala Salman Hunaidi, entitled:
“Evaluation of Osteopontin and Galectin-7 Levels and Galectin-7 Gene Expression in Women with Androgenic Alopecia in Babylon Province.”
The dissertation was supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ban Mahmood Shakir and Asst. Prof. Dr. Zina Saeed Al-Fadhli.
The defense session was attended by the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Tareq Hussein Mughir, along with several faculty members, researchers, academics, and postgraduate students.
During his defense, the researcher highlighted a progressive decrease in osteopontin and galectin-7 levels, as well as in galectin-7 gene expression, which correlated with disease severity (mild, moderate, and severe). This decline may indicate a potential role in the mechanisms of gradual hair loss in women.
The study also revealed metabolic disturbances, including increased waist circumference, elevated body mass index, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia, which could serve as early predictors of androgenic alopecia.
The research employed advanced analytical techniques, including ELISA and RT-PCR, to comprehensively analyze the mentioned biomarkers in patients’ serum and compare them with healthy controls
