Discussion of Graduation Research for Arab Board Students
As part of the requirements for obtaining the degree of Fellow of the Arab Board of Medical Specializations in Surgery, the thesis defense of Arab Board candidate Dr. Raed Abbas Jaafar Al-Mousawi was held at the Surgery Department Hall in Al-Hilla Teaching Hospital. His dissertation was entitled:
“Preoperative Prediction of Difficult Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Modified Preoperative Difficulty Score.”
The examination committee was composed of Professor Dr. Muhannad Abbass Al-Shalah (Chair), Consultant Dr. Mohsen Naif Kazem, Consultant Dr. Majid Mousa Jassim, and Consultant Dr. Raad Fadel Mohammed Al-Rubaie (Member and Supervisor).
The researcher explained that predicting the difficulty of laparoscopic cholecystectomy is of great importance for surgical planning and reducing intraoperative complications. Although ultrasound is commonly used for preoperative assessment, it may overlook anatomical variations and common bile duct stones. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) provides detailed imaging of the biliary system and may enhance predictive accuracy when integrated into preoperative clinical scoring systems.
The aim of the study was to evaluate whether incorporating MRCP findings into a modified preoperative scoring system improves the accuracy of predicting operative difficulty during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
The study concluded that integrating MRCP results into a modified 19-point preoperative scoring system significantly improves predictive accuracy for difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
The study recommended that performing MRCP routinely may enhance surgical planning, reduce complications, and help identify high-risk patients who may not be detected by ultrasound alone.
